We upgraded and restored a historic student housing building on Stanford’s campus.
This old house came complete with interesting nooks, crannies, sloped floors and knob & tube wiring. To minimize costs, functional items were preserved and only necessary upgrades were included. This necessitated we take great care not to modify any original electrical wiring so as not to open the door to the permitting authority requiring us to replace it all.
One goal of the project was to preserve the old look of house using craftsman touches such as new wood wainscot, wood floor base and resealed hardwood.
Project design drawings showed demolition of main staircase to remedy a ceiling clearance non-compliance at the top floor. Meade’s superintendent took the initiative to champion an effort to “save the stair” by raising the roof instead. This was successful.
Exterior ADA access at the driveway was modified mid-project when it was discover that the existing gas line protruded into ADA path width and could not be moved.
